Dead Down Wind Supports Wounded Warrior Hunt

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Dead Down Wind proudly participated in the 7th Annual SCI Low Country Chapter Wounded Warrior and WheelchairHunt at Nemours Plantation in South Carolina held on Oct. 24-25, 2011.

Four Dead Down Wind pro staffers worked as volunteers during the hunt. Gus Congemi, host of Live the Wild Life, and co-host Ernie Wojtysiak were on hand to film the hunt for theTV show and distribute Dead Down Wind gift bags to the hunters. Congemi said each gift bag contained numerous scent-prevention products to aid in the hunters’ success.

“Attending this hunt was important  to my  pro staff and me,” Congemi, says.  “Pro staffer Mike Gilbert is a retired Army 1st SGT. Pro staffer Mike Leavitt’s father is retired military, and my daughter is a West Point graduate actively serving as a Captain in the Army. These ties to the military made us feel strongly about giving any support we could to this event and our troops.  We wanted to give something back to those who serve our country.”

Fifty hunters, including 30 Wounded Warriors, 10 adult disabled hunters and 10 sick or injured youngsters participated in the hunt, and more than 200 volunteers lended a hand. Hunters took 14 deer and two hogs during the two-day hunt.

” Support for the organization allows it to expand its Disabled Hunter programs and inspire other groups and organizations to get involved in offering similar outdoor activities for the benefit of wounded warriors, sick youngsters and disabled adults,” Mark Peterson, SCI Low Country Chapter Disabled Hunter & Wounded Warrior program coordinator, says. “Every year hunters have inspirational stories of courage, perseverance and faith to share. They are stories that deserve to be told, especially the stories of service and sacrifice by the Wounded Warriors.”

Starving Blood Suckers One Bowhunter at a Time!

By Kevin Reese

As Published on Bowhunting.net

As an avid hog hunter, I spend a lot of time in areas where water is fairly prevalent; marshes, creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, are all important attributes to hog habitat because of a hog’s need for water in terms of survival but also as a resource for creating wallows used to control both insects and body temperature; hogs do not have sweat glands and depend on other ways to cool off. Understanding hog habitat and my obsession with hunting them one might note that because I am hunting “wet” areas, I face another brutal foe, those pesky mosquitoes!Author with two hogs, zero mosquito bites thanks to ThermaCELL.

Hunting hogs is where my love affair with ThermaCELL truly began. ThermaCELL operates off of a butane, heat plate and chemical pad system. Once ignited, the heat-plate warms up and vapor from the chemical pad is released. This vapor is what mosquitoes and black flies can’t tolerate. As hunters, fishermen, hikers, campers and anyone who spends time outdoors, we are always looking for a tool that keeps us bug free and hunters especially look for products without scent… and without resorting to rolling around in those wallows!Compact, easy to carry and place unit keeps you mosquito free to enjoy your time outdoors.

ThermaCELL’s vapor emits an organic scent. Original ThermaCELL pads are based on a synthetic Chrysanthemum fragrance, something wildlife considers a non-threatening part of their natural environment. ThermaCELL also offers a new scent and my personal favorite, Fresh Earth. Fresh Earth accomplishes the same mission as the original pad but is also a great cover scent!

I can honestly give testimony under oath (and those who know me remember) that in years past I’ve had as many as 400 mosquito bites in a single hour while hunting hogs in my favorite spot near a marsh. But since discovering ThermaCELL in that same stand, I have yet to receive a single bite! Don’t just believe me, believe others. If you hunt in areas steeped in mosquitoes or black flies, chances are good that you already have friends using ThermaCELL units during their outdoor adventures.

Cold feet? Not when you have these in your boots.ThermaCELL offers a complete line of defense against mosquitoes and black flies from individual ThermaCELL units to larger picnic, outdoor and camping ThermaCELL lanterns. ThermaCELL now also offers rechargeable Heated Insoles! Running insole temperatures between 100 – 111 degrees, there is never a season where ThermaCELL shouldn’t be a part of your gear! MeatEater Featuring Steven Rinella Premieres January 1st on Sportsman Channel

Sportsman Channel and Steven Rinella Announce New, Exclusive Original Production

New Berlin, WI – Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American Sportsman, has secured a partnership with author, hunter and outdoorsman Steven Rinella, to launch the new original series, MeatEater. The weekly half-hour series is a Sportsman Channel original production with Emmy-winning production studio, Zero Point Zero, and will premiere on January 1, 2012 at 9 pm E/P.

Growing up in the Midwest’s great outdoors – hunting, fishing and trapping from a young age – Rinella has always viewed the world through the eyes of an ancestral hunter/gatherer. Entranced by early man’s skill, ingenuity and sheer determination to survive and thrive under challenging circumstances, Rinella has made it his life’s work to cultivate those same qualities – and encourage people to recognize it in them. Raising a family and working as a writer in New York City, Rinella is an effective ambassador of the sportsman’s lifestyle to urban and suburban audiences.

Fresh off the success of his series “The Wild Within,” and numerous national magazine articles and two books, Rinella is ready to feed fans’ appetite for tracking prey to create mouth-watering fireside meals. In MeatEater, Rinella will deconstruct and master any hunting technique; track and pursue prey; and procure his own food. Whether tracking black-tail deer in the remote Alaskan wilderness, or rooting out Javelina in Texas, Rinella will defer to his back-country roots, challenging himself at every corner while providing nail biting adventure along the way.

“We are big fans of Steven’s story-telling on TV, in magazines, and in his two terrific books,” said Gavin Harvey, CEO of Sportsman Channel. “He is extraordinarily talented at conveying the emotional and spiritual aspects of what it means to be a hunter, what really drives us to prey on and consume wild game. With the premiere of MeatEater on Sportsman on New Year’s Day, fans of great outdoor TV have another reason to pop the champagne.”

“Hunting to me is primarily about the acquisition of food – that is the most important thing to me,” said Steven Rinella, host. “Quite simply, I like to eat wild game. That said, I have a great respect for the trophy element of hunting – I love the emblem of deer antlers and bear skulls. I also have a great respect for the adventure – I love the journeys, the places I get to go, and the people I get to hang out with. But all of that falls under the umbrella of hunting for my own food. Essentially, I am a hunter because I am a MeatEater.”

MeatEater will showcase Rinella in his best form – from hunting Black Bear in Alaska to tracking a Mountain Lion in southern Arizona. But Rinella can also bowhunt as he proves when he goes after Javelina in west Texas. Plus, he joins a biologist friend on a riverboat through some of the most untouched wetlands in Alaska for big-time duck hunting.

Each episode will end with Rinella preparing the day’s harvest for a mouth-watering meal. When Rinella chases the elusive Aoudad sheep in Texas, he prepares a North American style clay pot sheep. “When I eat a wild animal that I respect and admire, I feel like I capture some element of that animal and take some of that wildness into myself,” said Rinella. “Without that feeling – essentially tasting the wild – the experience of hunting is incomplete. And if I am going to eat it, I had better give the animal the respect of cooking it properly and with great care.”

Steven Rinella is an avid outdoorsman, writer, and television personality best known for his ability to translate the hunting lifestyle to a wide variety of audiences. He is the author of “The Scavenger’s Guide to Haute Cuisine” and the award-winning “American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon.” Rinella’s writing has appeared in such publications as the New York Times, Glamour, Men’s Journal, Outside, New Yorker and more traditional hunting and fishing publications like Field and Stream. He is a columnist for Petersen’s HUNTING, has appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered, CNN’s American Morning and Fox and Friends.

Dennis Dunn Hits the Bulls Eye with Barebow!

A quiet yet no less legendary bowhunter chronicles his incredible quest!

By Kevin Reese

Looking back over my years as a bowhunter I’ve always had a fascination with heading outdoors with stick and string; in fact, even as a Cub Scout I remember how fun it was to fling arrows into giant bales of hay. As an adult I can honestly say that fervor has never left. I am just as committed to traditional sports as I ever was; actually, since taking on bowhunting in my early 30’s I can say my passion for archery has grown exponentially over simple target shooting. So much so that I found myself teaching bowhunting and archery seminars! I am truly an addict.

Beyond hunting, I am also passionate about the history and milestones richly present in our archery and bowhunting heritage. Names like Fred Bear, Glenn St. Charles, Saxton Pope, Ben Pearson, Pete Shepley, Gail Martin, Chuck Adams, Doug Easton, Ted Nugent and young icon, Fred Eichler, fascinate me to no end. Reading their stories, catching footage of their adventures on my television set or visiting with them at one of the increasing number of trade shows or conferences I attend only serves to fuel my desire to be the best I can be in the bowhunting realm; further, to leave a legacy for my sons that allow them to utter my name in outdoor industry circles without reservation. But, while those archers and their stories are nothing short of legendary, Dennis Dunn also quietly roams those ranks and should be considered shoulder to shoulder among them. Read on…

I met Dennis Dunn last year at my Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) conference. We spoke shortly after my arrival and I immediately recognized Dennis as one fitting the ranks of those named earlier. The more we talked the more I appreciated Dunn as a fellow bowhunter but I had no idea of the significance of his contribution to our bowhunting tradition until he mentioned a book he wrote. “It chronicles my 40-year quest for North America’s Big Game 29 with a barebow.” My jaw dropped. He noticed my excitement and asked if I would like to preview the book.

Dunn’s coffee table book, Barebow! An Archer’s Fair-Chase Taking of North America’s Big-Game 29, is a 504-page, 9-pound masterpiece! Barebow! took top honors in 2010, earning the prestigious, Mossy Oak sponsored Pinnacle Award for Best Book, at the Professional Outdoor Media Association’s (POMA – www.professionaloutdoormedia.org) annual conference.

In 2005, Dennis became the first bowhunter in history to complete the North American Super Slam with a barebow; a barebow is a long bow, recurve bow or compound bow void of any devices used for aiming; in short, archers and bowhunters refer to this style as instinct shooting. Since Dunn completed this feat in 2005, two others have now joined him in what is widely regarded as the most difficult challenge currently afforded modern day bowhunters.

Dunn writing is vivid and fluid. He paints his adventures (and misadventures) with words that enveloped me and took me along on his quests. The imagery in text he creates throughout Barebow!’s pages is cinematic and grand in scope while black and white illustrations and full color paintings by world renowned wildlife artists Hayden and Dallen Lambson both fill and separate Dunn’s exploits; the father and son Lambson team contributed depictions of each of North America’s big 29 species, each one leading the reader into another of Dunn’s amazing stories. Barebow! is also filled with a comprehensive collection of Dunn’s personal photos, taken over the course of his 40-year quest. What you won’t find in Barebow! are photographs of Dunn posing with his trophies. One of his primary goals when authoring Barebow! was to create a treasure both hunters and non-hunters could enjoy. Currently, according to Dunn, one-third of his sales are to the non-hunting population.

During his quest , many of Dennis’ trophies, 21 to be exact, landed upon the pages of Pope and Young’s record book while his the final trophy, a Grizzly Bear, taken in 2004 with an 8-yard heart shot, became the world record, measuring a hefty 26 5/16. The bear is currently housed at the Pope & Young Club/St. Charles Museum in Chatfield, Minnesota.

If you’re looking for something to sink your reading teeth into, jump on Barebow! It’s not just a book; it’s a treasure, a family heirloom! I feel profoundly lucky to own a copy of Barebow! Moreover, since meeting Dunn, reading his book and corresponding with him, I’m proud to call him a friend. Barebow! truly chronicles a legendary hunter’s hunger for that which no other had ever achieved and does much to promote our shrinking heritage. Reading Barebow! will give you a greater understanding of the hearts and minds of bowhunters past, present and future. Dunn exemplifies all that is good in bowhunting and strikes a bullseye in sharing it!

Barebow! is a must-own for bowhunters and a should-own for everyone else!

Barebow! An Archer’s Fair-Chase Taking of North America’s Big Game 29 may be found at www.str8arrows.com, www.Amazon.com, www.BarnesandNoble.com and many other places online. The book retails for $95; limited edition with author and artists’ signatures, gilt-edged pages, leather spine, slipcase box, and premium cloth cover is also available for $195.

4th Annual Event Went Above and Beyond to Help Feed the Hungry

For Immediate Release

Waldorf, Maryland – HuntOnly.com one of the internet’s top deer hunting websites is proud to announce that their 4th Annual Hunter Palooza event raised over $17,000  to benefit Farmers and Hunter’s Feeding the Hungry (FHFH).

HuntOnly.com is proud to put together this annual event which began as a fundraiser for the local chapter of FHFH. Each season the local chapter would fall short of being able to process all the donated deer Southern Maryland hunters wished to donate. Since the first Hunter Palooza event in 2008, FHFH has been able to fund the butchering and processing every season.  Last year the local chapter of FHFH processed over 750 donated deer which provided over 150,000 meals to the local community.

This year Hunter Palooza was taken to a new level thanks to our MC of the event, Dale Dodson of Hunter’s Helping Kids.  “Dale kept the evening flowing and kept the crowd involved throughout the night.  He has a knack for spreading the passion and enthusiasm of hunting and helping others,” commented Steve Johnson, owner of HuntOnly.com.

Hunter Palooza 2011 gave away more guns than any previous event and between the live auctions, silent auctions, and 50/50 raffles, attendees had numerous chances to walk out with some great prizes from some big name sponsors. More importantly their generosity helped contribute to those in need.  HuntOnly.com and Fred’s Sports make a 100% donation of all the funds raised.

“I just want to thank all of the sponsors for supporting the 4th Annual Hunter Palooza, without them none of this would be possible” stated Johnson.  “I also would like to personally thank the more than 200 hunters and friends who came out to the event and showed their support.”

New Covert Crossbows– What’s Different?

BioSync Technology: designed to deliver superior balance for the ultimate crossbow experience.

By: Tim Herald

Crossbow hunting has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past few years, and I don’t think anyone can deny that the sport is here to stay. There are more opportunities than ever, and an increasing list of states are providing special seasons or allowing crossbows to be used during traditional archery seasons. Crossbow hunting is here to stay, and after participating in the sport for the last two years, I have to say that I think it is incredibly fun.

I also like the fact that crossbow hunting brings youth into “bowhunting” at an age before they can competently use a vertical bow to harvest animals. It also will extend the hunting lifetime of older hunters who may not be able to draw a vertical bow as they become elderly.  I have seen this with my two young sons as well as my father after he had heart surgery.

So enough about the virtues of crossbows in general! I own an original Carbon Express Covert 3.5 crossbow that the company came out with a few years ago. It is a great bow, my kids have racked up a ton of deer and turkeys with it, and my dad and I have also both killed turkeys with it. I couldn’t imagine it getting much better until I learned about the new CX I and 2 crossbows that are CX’s second generation.

How are these crossbows better and why should I pick them over anything else out there I asked, so I went straight to the source to find out, and I talked to Carbon Express COO John Biafore about it. He began with, “BioSync Technology is the biggest attribute of these new crossbows that set them apart. What that technology is all about is Body-Bow- Bolt. We want the bow to fit the body, and then the bolt to work at maximum efficiency with the bow for a perfect fit all the way around. That way when someone hunts with our crossbow, he doesn’t have to be thinking about the crossbow, bolt or our equipment; he can simply concentrate on the hunt, and that’s how it should be.”

Biafore explained, “Our original Coverts were great, but we wanted them more comfortable. So we took a lot of weight out and improved the balance of the crossbow. Most of this came out of the front end of the crossbow, but it made it much more comfortable. It no longer feels like you are dragging around a log with you to a treestand or blind.”

Carbon Express now has a premium line of crossbow bolts available in their now famous Maxima line. There is a Maxima Hunter and a Kevlar coated maxima Hunter KV. What sets these bolts apart are that they have Dual Spine Weight Forward Technology just like the Maxima line of arrows, and they are properly spined for the CX crossbows. The Dual Spine Weight Forward means that the dynamic and static spine of the bolt has been considered, so this means the front end of the bolt flexes more giving forgiveness, while the back end is stiffer and recovers quicker. This is what makes an arrow or bolt perform to its maximum, and these are the most technologically sound bolts that can be bought. In short, the bolts and the crossbows being matched up will simply perform better.

So we now see what BioSync is all about. The bow is comfortable, and it shoots great. What else is so good about the CX line I asked? Biafore answered, “We really feel that not only are these great crossbows from a technical and performance standpoint, they are also the best value on the market. The CX 1 crossbow package comes in at $499 and the CS 2 at $599. The difference is the CX 1 is a 330fps bow and the CX 2 is 360 fps. These packages both include the crossbow, a 4×32 illuminated scope, a quiver, rail lube as well as three Maxima Hunter bolts. It is a package that is ready to sight in and take to the field. Also, with these bolts, we haven’t tried to bump our speeds up, our bolts perform at our published fps speeds.”

When speaking on price, John expounded, “Carbon Express is entrenched as a high quality arrow company, but that doesn’t automatically transfer over to the new crossbow market. We know we make a great product, but we also know we have to earn the consumer’s crossbow business, so making a great valued package is what we decided was the best route to begin earning that business. We absolutely want to be best in class both in performance and price.”

My last question was besides being a great shooting crossbow that sells at an incredibly fair price, what other things might a potential buyer want to consider in the CX line? Biafore said, “The package obviously offers a lot, but also consider that we cut no corners to get to that price. The crossbows are made with anodized aluminum flight rail, proven carbon infused limbs and premium strings and cables. There is an anti-dryfire mechanism that is very important for safety.”

After the fun my family and I have had over the past two years crossbow hunting, even though our Covert 3.5 is still incredibly accurate, I am going to have to consider one of the new CX 2’s. I have two close friends who bought them recently, and they are fantastic all the way around. After talking with Biafore and understanding more about BioSync, I am really leaning toward the upgrade. If you are in the market for a crossbow, you owe it to yourself to check the newest CX’s from Carbon Express.
